A Cup of Heritage: Maricopa Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at Honeycutt Coffee

Maricopa raised a cup to Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, October 2, as Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar and CopaTV poured free Horchata Cold Brew for the first 50 guests. Behind the cinnamon and cream is a centuries-old drink that traveled from Valencia, Spain, to Mexico and Central America — and a reminder of how deeply Hispanic and Latino traditions flavor our everyday life here in Maricopa. Here's the story behind the cup, and why this month matters to our neighbors.

A Cup of Heritage: Maricopa Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar

Some of the most meaningful celebrations in our community don't happen on a big stage. They happen over a counter, in a familiar coffee shop, between neighbors who know each other's names. On Friday, October 2, Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar and CopaTV invited Maricopa to do exactly that, offering a free Horchata Cold Brew to the first 50 customers in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration was sponsored by CopaTV, owned by John Stapleton.

Why September 15 to October 15?

National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. It began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded in 1988 to a full 30-day observance, signed into law as Public Law 100-402.

The dates are intentional. September 15 marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18. Rather than following the calendar month, this observance follows the history of the people it honors.

It is also worth remembering that this is not one single culture. Our neighbors trace their roots to more than 20 countries, each with its own foods, music, faith traditions and language. Some prefer "Hispanic," some "Latino," "Latina" or "Latine," and many proudly name their family's home country first. The most respectful thing any of us can do is listen and honor the way each person describes their own heritage.

The Story in the Cup

Horchata is a beautiful example of how heritage travels. Its roots reach back to the Valencia region of Spain, where tiger nuts arrived during Muslim rule in the 8th century and a horchata-like drink was being made by the 13th century. When the tradition crossed the ocean, tiger nuts were not available, so cooks in Mexico created horchata de arroz, made with rice, cinnamon and sugar, which became the country's most beloved version and a classic agua fresca.

The drink kept evolving as it moved through Latin America. In El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica, horchata is built around ground morro (jícaro) seeds with rice, sometimes enriched with cocoa. So when Maricopa sipped a Horchata Cold Brew today, we were tasting centuries of migration, adaptation and family recipes, carried forward by generations who made a new home without forgetting the old one. That is a story many Maricopa families know well.

A Neighborhood Gathering Place

It fits that this celebration happened at Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar. The shop has long been a local community coffee house and meeting place, and over the years it has earned recognition as a favorite gathering spot where business and city leaders meet in a more casual setting. Under owner Tanya Powers, the cafe has a history of giving back, including a month of free coffee for first responders as a thank-you.

Standing behind the counter in her pink Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar shirt, Tanya shared her delight in partnering with CopaTV and its owner, John Stapleton, who sponsored the day's free Horchata Cold Brew. It was a true neighbor-to-neighbor moment: a local business and a local media voice coming together to honor the Hispanic and Latino families who help make Maricopa home. Partnerships like this one remind us that celebrating culture is something we do best together.

Celebrating Beyond the Cup

Hispanic Heritage Month runs through October 15, but the contributions of our Hispanic and Latino neighbors are part of Maricopa every day — in the small businesses we support, the classrooms our children share, the churches and ministries that serve our families, the farms and kitchens that feed us, and the artists who bring color to our city. Here are a few simple ways to honor that spirit:

Visit and support a Hispanic- or Latino-owned business in Maricopa this month and beyond. Ask a neighbor about a family tradition, recipe or holiday they love, and then truly listen. Explore the official resources at HispanicHeritageMonth.gov with your children. And share the stories you learn, because a community that knows one another's stories is a community that cares for one another.

From all of us at Maricopa Lifestyle Magazine: ¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! Thank you to Honeycutt Coffee Cafe & Wine Bar and to CopaTV and its owner, John Stapleton, for bringing us together, one cup at a time.
